Hazmat Endorsement (H)

The Hazmat endorsement (H) allows commercial drivers to transport hazardous materials (hazmat), which could include a wide range of substances that pose a risk to health, safety, or the environment. These materials are classified under federal and state regulations, and drivers with this endorsement are specially trained to handle them. The endorsement is added to a Class A, B, or C CDL.

Steps to Obtain the Hazmat Endorsement:

  1. Apply for the Endorsement: This requires you to have a valid CDL before applying.

    • Proper handling of hazardous materials

    • Emergency response protocols

    • Shipping documents and labeling

  3. Background Check by the TSA: A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check is mandatory. This check includes screening for criminal history and possible threats to national security. It may take several weeks to complete.

  5. Medical and Driving Qualifications: You must meet the general health and driving requirements set by the Department of Transportation (DOT).
